Occaisionally, you get the chance to take some time and play out a deeper and more multi-faceted story. Finding the thread, building the structure, and making that duration count the key to pulling it off.
This is a excerpt from a 23min long documentary project, with 14 interviews featuring different staff, business leaders, and recipients showing both the huge scope and the human depth of LIFE Community. This specific piece touches on the incredible initiative called Christmas Box, a project I've been able to work with yearly for most of the last decade.
This larger documentary was a real baby of mine. I got to pre-produce, write, direct, and film it; and then got to really settle into the edit and craft the final output.
Over the many parts it included camera work by Matt Gerand, Josh Allen, Jamin Greenwood, Glen Manchester, and myself.
An excerpt from a series of high-production video newsletters I edited for a large age-care and retirement village group. The CEO would visit a branch location, share an update to camera from outside, then visit to chat with and feature the stories of the staff.
The challenge to move through information and content in a brief but heartfelt way that captured the warmth and personality was key.

Condensing down and telling the layered journey of LIFE's building miracle on Normanby road. This was a cool exercise in covering what could be mundane topics like resource consent and bank movements in a way thats engaging and carries the emotion it held for those who walked it out.
Originally a longer more detailed video, I worked to summarise and shorten it to this compact duration.
Director, producer, and original editor - Jared Buckley. Camera operator and revised edit - myself.
One of the biggest learning chapters in my life was a period where edited a series of beautifully personal stories for LIFETV, a long running series lovingly directed by Craig Henderson. I found a whole new level of craft and care for every frame working with Craig, and was really honnoured to work on these great stories.
Created (in two parts) for LIFETV.co, Director/Producer - Craig Henderson, DOP - Matt Gerand.
As LIFE turned 30, we wanted to celebrate it and tell some of the story of those many years. There was no better way than by telling it through the people who make LIFE what is is and who represent the heart of it so well in their perspectives. We spoke to a range of people, from the founders, to the very first volunteers, to the young people who were born into and grew up in their legacy.
We built this creative interview set in the back storage area, against the wall of signatures and prayers people wrote on as the building was being dedicated, bringing elements from the church's past like the old school Overhead Projector and one of church's first amplifiers. I loved the chapter titles we did practically on that wall, and the awesome archlval footage we digitised from old VHS and DV tapes.
Crew - Abe Raffills and Jamin Greenwood.
